on the Scheme and it was therefore abandoned. While on the

subject may I also mention, to prove the interest taken by

Chinese in this particular branch of learning, that though

the competition for medical scholarships that I established

for Chinese a few years ago was slack in the beginning the

scholarships seem far inadequate to-day for the number of

competitors.

This Chinese Medical College now supplies native

medical practitioners and these men have proved to be of great

necessity during the Plague epidemics.

Just as a Medical College for Chinese has proved to

be a great benefit to the Community, I have every reason to

urge that a Technical School will be found to be equally so.

Some years ago the queen's College devoted many

hours of the day to the teaching of the Chinese language.

This was strongly objected to by the parents of the children,

although the majority of the scholars who attended the
